Science Discovery Books

These are fantastic! Vibrant, fascinating, well-written books reveal the history of scientific discoveries, including some that are not usually covered in children's literature. Highly recommended for ages 11-14. Published by Coward, McCann & Geoghegan, Inc. in the 1970's and 80's.

There are a couple of titles that weren't appropriate for our library, but most are among the best science writing that I've seen for children!

Coils, Magnets, and Rings: Michael Faraday's World
Dance of the Planets: The Universe of Nicholas Copernicus
Darwin and the Enchanted Isles
Dr. Beaumont and the Man with the Hole in His Stomach
The Gift of Magic Sleep: Early Experiments in Anesthesia
Lost City in the Clouds: The Discovery of Machu Picchu
Maria's Cave
Mary's Monster

Mister Peale's Mammoth
The Mysterious Rays: Marie Curie's World
Secret in a Sealed Bottle: Lazzaro Spallanzani's Work with Microbes
The Secret of the Royal Mounds: Austen Layard and the First Cities of Assyria
She Never Looked Back: Margaret Mead in Samoa
Truth on Trial: The Story of Galileo Galilei
