The Day Book Series
(I shelve history, historical fiction, and biography all together by date. The red labels are mine.)
This well-written British series was published in the early 1970's by Robert Tyndall in the UK. Some titles were reprinted in the US by Abelard-Schuman and Criterion. These are about 50 pages each.
Each book follows several characters through daily life--a king, a merchant or priest, a soldier or peasant, a woman, and a child. As the day progresses, the action switches back and forth between the characters, giving an accurate and engaging picture of daily life throughout society. The books are carefully researched, well-written, and abundantly illustrated with reproductions of contemporary objects.
Written for ages 10 and up, these work very well for reading aloud with a wide range of ages. When little kids are listening, it helps to pick out each character's story and read it in sequence.
Some of the information for this title list has come from dust jackets. I suspect that some of these books were planned for future publication but never completed. I am only certain of the books in black.
